What to Expect from a Neuropsychological Evaluation

A neuropsychological evaluation is more than a single test. It is a structured process that combines a detailed clinical interview, standardized cognitive testing, review of medical and educational records when available, and integration of collateral information from family or other treating providers when appropriate. Most evaluations involve four to six hours of testing, sometimes split across two appointments when fatigue is a concern. Testing is conducted in a quiet office, with breaks as needed. Patients are not asked to answer questions they are unwilling to answer, and the process is collaborative throughout. After testing, scoring and interpretation typically take one to three weeks depending on case complexity. Results are reviewed with the patient, and a written report is provided to the patient and to the referring provider when authorized. Dr. Wilson remains available for follow-up questions after the report is delivered, including questions that arise weeks or months later.
